You should be sad - Halsey

The Experience: There's some things I gotta say... Mere revenge can't redeem. Only the truth has any chance of changing someone's heart and mind.
The Vibe: Strength.
The Topic: Betrayal.
The Value: Authenticity.
The Tension: You're not half the man you think that you are (You're blind to the hurt you caused... and to the love you could have and should have givenVS. You should be sad (Total repentance is the only thing that could save you).

Music video: The music video itself showcases an intense Halsey, angrier than in the lyrics, at a gratuitously orgy-like disco. We're not including the video due to the full side nudity in the last few frames. However, that is the only part of the music video that ties directly into the the lyrics themselves. You can argue the relative merits of nudity in art, but in any case the iconography of a naked Halsey on the back of a white horse adds a lot to the songs message. In art nudity is often associated with vulnerability - no protection. A horse is a symbol of strength. In particular a white horse is a symbol of a paladin or champion. Someone strong enough and noble enough to protect others. That double image of sensitivity and vulnerability paired with noble strength is Halsey's image of the ideal woman. Not afraid of intimacy, but very well aware of the risks that gift of self entails. Add that to the lyrics' description of what the ideal man should and shouldn't be, and Halsey is offering get an ambitious picture of what an authentic relationship would look like.

The Meaning of You should be sad: More than a breakup song. Halsey's hard-hitting lyrics hurt. It's a far-reaching condemnation of the money, sex and fame manhood preached by so many of her peers. It's also very hard to disagree with. Men should be and can be better. To start, he's dangerous enough that she has to run away: I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you and ran so f-cking far that you would never ever touch me again. He's incapable of love: you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you. There's no easy fix: you can't fill the hole inside of you with money, drugs and cars. He's blind to the problem: you're not half the man you think that you are. But Halsey isn't full of rancor. She's calm, collected, and gives him the first step towards his own redemption, even if that will never bring them back together: you should be sad. Her critique is powerful above all because it presupposes and holds her ex accountable to a very high ideal, and assumes that ideal is attainable.

Ask yourself: What would the perfect relationship between the perfect man and the perfect woman look like? How do you measure up?

LYRICS:

I want to start this out and say
I gotta get it off my chest
Got no anger, got no malice
Just a little bit of regret

Know nobody else will tell you
So there's some things I gotta say
Gonna jot it down and then get it out
And then I'll be on my way

No, you're not half the man you think that you are
And you can't fill the hole inside of you with money, drugs and cars
I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you
'Cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you

Oh, I feel so sorry
I feel so sad
I tried to help you
It just made you mad
And I had no warning
About who you are
I'm just glad I made it out
Without breaking down
And then ran so f-cking far
That you would never ever touch me again
Won't see your alligator tears
'Cause, no, I've had enough of them

Let me start this off by saying
I really meant well from the start
Take a broken man right in my hands
And then put back all his parts

But you're not half the man you think that you are
And you can't fill the hole inside of you with money, girls and cars
I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you
'Cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you

Oh, I feel so sorry
I feel so sad
I tried to help you
It just made you mad
And I had no warning
About who you are
Just glad I made it out without breaking down

Oh, and I feel so sorry
I feel so sad
I tried to help you
It just made you mad
And I had no warning
About who you are
About who you are

Hey
Hey
Hey
Hey

'Cause you're not half the man you think that you are
And you can't fill the hole inside of you with money, drugs and cars
I'm so glad I never ever had a baby with you
'Cause you can't love nothing unless there's something in it for you

I feel so sad
You should be sad
You should be
You should be sad
You should be
You should be
You should be
