Didn't I - OneRepublic

The Experience: Didn't I love you? Then why did it end? Love is supposed to last forever...
The Vibe: Sad.
The Topic: Loss.
The Value: Love.
The Tension:  We're the type of melody that don't fade out, don't fade out, can't fade out (True love can't die and that's what we had) VS. Tell me why good things have to die (So how could death come for our love?).

Music video: OneRepublic perform Didn't I from the quiet solitude of a monastery surrounded by silent but not uncompassionate saints. It's a lonely place, but the camera work makes a point of showcasing the statues, stained glass images and paintings of Mary, Christ, and the saints, present - and perhaps comforting - in every shot. OneRepublic doesn't reject or rage against that spiritual setting. Because we might not understand how God lets our losses happen, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care, isn't there, or doesn't share our sadness.

The Meaning of Didn't I: OneRepublic's ode to loss is sadness. But not the raging type. Didn't I is the soft quiet type. The type of sadness you still owe to the dead once the initial denial and rage has passed. The type of sadness that says you still love. The type of sadness that softly asks why? And the type of sadness you shouldn't let go of. It will mature. It will heal. But it won't go away. And you don't want it to.

Ask yourself: Has your sadness and loss deepened into even stronger love?

Album: Human (2020)

LYRICS:

Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we fly?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
But didn't we, didn't we say goodbye?

Swear that I saw your face
At a coffee shop on 8th
Or maybe it was in my mind
And I swear that I heard your laugh
From a person that walked past me
At a party the other night

Never thought we'd ever have to go without
Take you over anybody else, hands down
We're the type of melody that don't fade out
Don't fade out, can't fade out

Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we fly?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
But didn't we, didn't we say goodbye?

Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we try?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
Tell me why good things have to die

Do you remember all those plans
That we made after too many drinks
In the kitchen of your brother's apartment?
Where life was like a wishin' well
4 AM and raisin' hell
D-mn, I knew you oh so well

Never thought we'd ever have to go without
Take you over anybody else, hands down
We're the type of melody that don't fade out
Don't fade out, can't fade out

Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we fly?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
But didn't we, didn't we say goodbye?

Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we try?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
Tell me why good things have to die

We had our moments, didn't we? (Oh)
So much that we will never be (Oh)

Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we fly?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
But didn't we, didn't we say goodbye?

Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I love you?
Didn't we, didn't we, didn't we try?
Know that I, know that I still care for you
Tell me why good things have to die
